The official artwork for Florence + the Machine's single, "King".
It’s been almost four years since Florence + the Machine released their vulnerable album High as Hope, and fans have impatiently waited for their next move.
“King” is a powerful debut single for their currently untitled fifth studio album. It takes us through the much too familiar struggles of a relationship, the internal tug-of-war between success and stability, and what it means to be an ambitious woman.
The chorus rings with dominance and absolute assurance:
I need my golden crown of sorrow, my bloody sword to swing
My empty halls to echo with grand self-mythology
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
We are reunited with Florence’s addictive resonating vocals in the bridge and brought down to a vulnerable self-reflection in the outro:
And I was never as good as I always thought I was
But I knew how to dress it up
I was never satisfied, it never let me go
Just dragged me by my hair and back on with the show
If “King” sets the tone for their newest project, we can expect an album that is unapologetically honest and dynamic in both sound and lyrics.
