Folktronica is a musical genre that features components of folk music and electronica, often combining acoustic instruments with elements of electronic music such as synthesizers and drum machines. It began in the 1980’s where this new sound was found across Eastern European countries such as Bulgaria and Albania. Into the 1990’s and early 2000’s, post-rock and indie artists shifted to this new sound as well. Today the term “folktronica” isn’t seen often, but its unique sounds can still be found under the indie, folk, electronic, and dance genres. Think you may have found your perfect musical crossover? Some notable folktronica artists to listen to today are Bon Iver, Patrick Wolf, Caribou, and Big Red Machine.
