NPR Celebrates Latinx Heritage Month with Omar Apollo Tiny Desk Concert

With September 15th marking the first day of Latinx Heritage Month, NPR kicks off the month with Omar Apollo's Tiny Desk Concert. The Mexican-American "Evergreen" singer from Indiana performs a 4 song set, accompanied by Las Mariachis Lindas.

He begins with a personal favorite, "En El Olvido," a sad and soulful more traditional Mexican style song. Sung in Spanish, the song roughly translates to "In Oblivion" as he describes wanting to leave an old lover forgotten.

"We're about to get real, even more sad than that song," he says as he introduces the next song, "Evergreen." "Evergreen," which he recently retitled to "Evergreen (You Didn't Deserve Me At All)," delivers exactly the sentiment in the extended title.

"Petrified" is the next song, which he states as one of his favorites on the newest record Ivory. It fittingly follows the first two songs, with an acoustic guitar accompanying a slow and rhythmic ballad.

The set picks up a bit with "Endlessly," a more upbeat R&B song that Omar performs with a steady sway and head bob.

With his recent release of album Ivory and an upcoming tour, Omar gears up for an already busy year. As "Evergreen" climbs up charts, long time listeners reflect on his earlier career milestones. From catchy R&B to corridos reminiscent of many Hispanic childhoods, his growth and ongoing achievements are to be celebrated in the Latinx community beyond just this month.
