March is International Women’s Month and what better time to shine a light on female music artists than now.
The great thing about female artists is that they don’t fit into one box. They are empowering, creative, affectionate, daring, and perfectly unique. We’ve cried to them in our lonely beds, sang with them into our hairbrush mics in the shower, and screamed to them in the car with our best friends. They’re companions for our greatest accomplishments and worst defeats.
In honor of women in the music industry, I spoke with some of my dearest female friends and even some new faces about their favorite female artists.
Molly Cronin 19 Texas
Molly’s favorite artist is Billie Eilish, and she’s been listening to her since the beginning of high school. It was a time where she felt so much pressure to know who she should be, and Billie’s music was the only thing that captured that feeling. “It was like reading my journal when I listened to her songs. She’s also my age so I feel like I’m growing up with her.” Her favorite song of hers is “Getting Older” because it really captures the feeling of growing up, which can be isolating. “The way she explains it is comforting because it helps me realize that everyone my age is going through those same thoughts and feelings.”
Alyssa Lombardo 22 Florida
Alyssa is one of my closest friends, and I’ve never met someone who loves Lana del Rey as much as her. She loves her poetry. Not only does she think Lana is a great lyricist, but her instruments are beautiful as well. Her favorite song was hard to pick, but it would probably be an unreleased one called “Say Yes to Heaven”. “It sounds like you're ascending. Her voice, the lyrics. It sounds not of this earth.”
Jordan Huerta 21 California
I recently saw Mitski in concert with my roommate and good friend Jordan, and she’s a huge fan. “She’s a woman of color and she talks a lot about how that affects her romantic relationships and relationships with her parents. It’s nice to see and it’s something I can relate to.” Jordan’s favorite song is “A Burning Hill” because of its poetic elements and how much it resonates with her.
Abbie Biancardi 20 Florida
Abbie is a fan of K-Pop and her favorite female group is LOONA. They changed the way Abbie sees K-Pop because they get along well and allow their unique personalities to shine. “They’re more than just a girl group. It was something I hadn’t seen before and, in a way, made me enjoy music again because there was so much variety in just one group.” Her favorite song of theirs is “Butterfly” because of the beautiful lyrics and choreography.
And me? My favorite female singer and forever idol has been Taylor Swift for as long as I can remember. I’ve been listening to her since I was 8 years old and she’s been by my side through every heart break, long car ride, girl’s night out, you name it. I look up to her not just because of her craft, which is a force to be reckoned with, but because of her wonderful personality. She is a lover, friend, dedicated daughter, and supports her fellow musicians. Her discography is insanely versatile and filled with some of the best song writing I’ve had the privilege of dissecting. Taylor has had a huge impact on me. She is a big reason why I became a writer from a young age and why I’ll forever be a hopeless romantic drawn to the beauty in words. And don’t ask me what my favorite song is. It’ll be a much too long conversation.
