The University of California Irvine has students from all over California, the U.S., and the world! Our university also offers 85 majors, which has created a diverse student body. This led me to wonder about the variety in our students’ music taste. When you pass another student wearing headphones, do you ever wonder what they’re listening to?
Last week, I had the opportunity to interview some fellow UCI students about their music taste while walking around campus.
Micherlange Francois – 3rd Year African American Studies
“Keep my head above water / My eyes gettin' bigger / The world gettin' smaller”
“I listen to anything but country or rock and a very limited amount of pop music. What I listen to most is R&B and rap.” Some of her favorite artists are Moses Sumney and Thundercat and she’s currently hooked on the songs “Family Ties” by Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar and “Fair Chance” by Thundercat.
Kayla Benza – 1st Year Pharmaceuticals Major
“When the lights go out (Lights go out), she's all I ever think about (Think about)”
Kayla was listening to Ang Huling El Bimbo by Eraserheads, a Filipino alternative rock band. She said she listens to a lot of Filipino music but also likes 5SOS, her favorite song being “English Love Affair”. “A great throwback!”
Matt Ahn – 1st Year Pre-Law Major
“The sky is calling / The wind is at my shoulders”
Matt loves rock and roll! He mentioned that he was going to a Slash concert the day after our interview. When asked about his favorite song he said, “There’s too many! Probably “Bent to Fly” by Slash featuring Myles Kennedy.”
Natalie Chen – 3rd Year Public Health Science Major
“All I know is that when this cup ends, the next one begins”
Natalie is a big fan of Drake and was listening to the song “N 2 Deep” from his album Certified Lover Boy. She also likes The Weeknd and would describe her music taste as R&B.
Allison Bernardo – 2nd Year Chemistry Major
“Too many hours in a day / Wasted on daydreams”
“My music taste is varied. I listen to a little bit of everything.” The song she’s currently hooked on is “Falling Apart” by ARMNHMR and RUNN.
Elysia Ma – 2nd Year Psychology Major
“Think things move pretty fast down here / But just wait my dear 'til we get up there”
Elysia mostly listens to indie and indie/pop. She loves The Strokes and her favorite song by them is “When it Started”.
Maya Mahesh – 2nd Year Psychology Major
“Barked at the moon amid an empty street / We felt the remnants of the evening heat”
Maya, like many other students I interviewed, said she listens to a little bit of everything but her favorite band is Her’s, an indie rock band from England. Her favorite song of theirs is “Harvey”.
Vivianna Hau – 2nd Year Asian American Studies
“Ooh, I fear the battle's just begun / Ooh, though we're here someday we will be gone”
Vivianna is a big fan of R&B and hip-hop. The song she’s currently hooked on is Babylon by OutKast.
Marcos Fuentes – 1st Year Physics Major
“Had to cool me down to take another round / Now I'm back in the ring to take another swing”
Marcos listens to anything but country and classical. He’s a big fan of rock music because he grew up listening to it with his dad. He was currently listening to “You Shook me all Night Long” by AC/DC.
I was amazed at the variety of music UCI students are listening to and found fans of many genres. I also learned that it’s an easy topic to start a conversation with because it’s something many people are passionate about! Music can be a wonderful way to connect with others.
